Famous Women of the Bible

Today on Celebrate the Bible (Listen Below):

At one time, books were the main form of home entertainment. There was no cost spared when it came to advertising.

One such advertisement is for a book titled “Famous Women of the Bible”. It is from the year 1898.

Taken from an 1898 advertisement for biblical-based book sales.

The title of this ad promotes the book as having “religious and social helps for mothers.” It also offers guidance for daughters. It includes “the most striking scenes and events in the lives of the women of the bible. These include heroines, queens, prophetesses, ideal mothers, and many others distinguished for their noble deeds.”

It goes on to state that “this work is superbly illustrated with engravings of the highest order of workmanship. They are made direct from the original paintings especially for this unrivaled volume. Every picture shows a masterpiece of one of the greatest painters.

I’ve included photos that show the beautiful illustrations from the advertisement. If you are listening to this as a podcast, and would like to see the photos, please go to celebratethebible250.com

The photos that I have included are of Rebekah at the Well. They also depict Deborah, the Judge of Israel. Additionally, there are images of Faith, Hope and Charity. Lastly, the photos include Jesus and the sisters of Bethany.

Faith, Hope and Charity

Keep in mind that the illustrations included here are from the advertisement, and do not show the quality of the illustration in the book itself.

Now this particular advertisement is geared toward book sellers, rather than the general public. The four-page ad closes out with an announcement. It states, “AGENTS WANTED: In every country to sell this very valuable and attractive work.” This is a rare opportunity for new beginners. Every intelligent person can succeed with this great work. Act quickly.”

The book was offered in fine cloth, silk finished and marbled edges for $2.50; or in extra fine full morocco leather, with gilt edges for $3.50.

The publishing company was the Home Art Picture & Book Company, 134 Van Buren Street, Chicago Illinois.

I’ll be including a few more interesting biblical-based, American history advertising throughout the upcoming year.

So, until we meet again, and for “Celebrate the Bible 250” this is Francis Douglas. If you’re interested in learning more about the History of the Christian Holy Bible in America, please subscribe now.
